ABOUT THE COMMUNITY FREE CLINIC

Our Mission

To help Cabarrus County adults move toward wellness by providing comprehensive healthcare and access to additional services for care.

Dedicated staff and volunteers, generous contributions from our donors, and community Sponsors…together, we are The Community Free Clinic. Together, we serve the community.

Who We Serve

We offer primary care, chronic disease management, an in-house lab, specialist care and referrals, and behavioral health to low-income uninsured adults of Cabarrus County. We are the only free clinic in Cabarrus County.

Our mission is to increase access to healthcare. We do this with partnerships with medical providers and nonprofit organizations throughout Cabarrus County. We work to offer comprehensive healthcare this way, including limited dental and mental health onsite. We’re also able to bring partners to the Clinic to offer mobile health care, including cancer screening and STD testing. We continue to look for partnerships to treat every person fully, removing barriers to care like a lack of transportation.

To qualify as a patient, adults must have a household income at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Line. For a single adult, that is less than $45,000 per year, and fora family of four, that is less than $90,000 per year. The Community Free Clinic helps those adults who do not have private health insurance and do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. All patients must be residents of Cabarrus County. Residents of nearby counties can find a free clinic at the North Carolina Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NCAFCC)

By treating uninsured low-income adults, the Community Free Clinic helps to improve long term patient health outcomes and reduce non-emergency room visits to the Emergency Department.

Our History

The Community Free Clinic has been helping uninsured adults in Cabarrus County receive free medical care for chronic diseases for 30 years.

In 1994, Dr. George Liles and Dr. David Lockhart (pictured right) established the Community Free Clinic because they recognized that many low-income working age adults in Cabarrus County did not have health insurance and therefore, did not have access to medical care or prescription medication to treat chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, and COPD. The Clinic first opened its doors on February 15, 1994. Since then, it has outgrown three locations before moving to its current location in 2003.

As the cost of health insurance and living increased, the Community Free Clinic included acute and preventive care to patients. Now, we also offer some specialty care, limited mental and dental health, and referrals to other Cabarrus County medical providers for additional medical services. All services inside the Clinic remain free to patients.

Currently, the Clinic has both full time and part time staff and 300 volunteers for medical and administrative support, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians and more.
